書名：One Hundred Years of Solitude(百年孤寂)

【百年孤寂】述說一個家庭一百年間的故事﹐其間沒有甚麼高潮或特別戲劇性的場面﹐反有點像【紅樓夢】﹐細細碎碎地說了好多個人小故事或小場面﹐沿著時間順序推展﹐到了第一百年﹐這個家庭的所有成員﹑連帶經由這個家庭開墾的小鎮Macondo同時於狂風中歸於無有。整個故事從零到零﹐中間的一百年則如作者在結語所說﹕『都被風捲走﹐被驅逐於人類的記憶之外』﹐看完後第一個反應是白花了時間﹐結局連帶過程竟然只是個零﹐實在荒謬﹗待氣平後﹐這句"the city of mirrors (or mirages) would be wiped out by the wind and exiled from the memory of men..."竟一直盤踞心頭不散﹐細想起來﹐原來『集體失憶』是作者要闡述的其中一個主題。

Jose Arcadio Segundo 是家族的第四代﹐一生平平無奇﹐中年時領導一群被剝削的香蕉莊園勞工罷工﹐他們在火車站前聚集了三千多人示威﹐警方開槍鎮壓﹐片刻間便變成屠殺。Jose Arcadio Segundo 醒來時發現自己躺在屍體堆中﹐而屍體則堆在火車廂裏﹐他掙扎滾下火車﹐目送二百多個滿載屍體的車廂向海邊奔去﹐他跌跌碰碰地返回小鎮﹐拉住途中每個遇見的人說﹕“他們殺了三千多人﹐把屍體都拉到海邊丟掉﹗”就在大屠殺發生的同一個晚上﹐每一個他遇到的人竟都這樣回答他﹕“沒有的﹐沒有甚麼屠殺﹐沒有人死。”Jose Arcadio Segundo返回火車站﹐竟找不到一絲屠殺痕跡。

看完這段事故﹐我的手禁不住微微發抖﹐作者真是個先知﹐他怎知道20年後(此書寫於1969)在中國的北京會發生如此相似的事件﹖

此事以後﹐只有一個家族裏被禁錮的私生子Aureliano相信Jose Arcadio Segundo 所說關於大屠殺的故事﹐後來Aureliano 跟鎮裏的人討論關於當年大屠殺的事﹐那些人都奇道﹕『教科書裏都已經有定案了﹐當年是一宗和平示威﹐遊行了不久大家便解散﹐那有甚麼大屠殺﹖』“教科書”﹑“大屠殺”﹐你聯想到甚麼﹖

原來人是會患上集體失憶的病﹐病因有二﹐其中之一就是【百年孤寂】作者所述的﹐官方∕媒體怎樣說﹐久而久之﹐就會成為大眾的共同記憶﹐就算是親歷者也不見得能掌握事情的全部﹐譬如書中另有一小孩於屠殺中存活下來﹐長大後他憶述事件﹐說看到軍警開槍﹐很多人倒下時﹐他被人嘲笑一番後﹐有人好心告訴他根本沒有人死去。書中沒說那小孩信是不信﹐但他到底不像Jose Arcadio Segundo 看到滿載屍體的火車﹐說不定很多年後﹐他也慢慢地相信根本沒有大屠殺。

但三千多人失蹤了﹐他們的家人不懷疑麼﹖書中沒有詳究家人的反應﹐只是模糊帶過﹐我倒有個想法﹐太痛苦的事﹐誰願意銘記於心﹖

Wow, what a thought! It also reminds me of the Japanese killing thousands of chinese but won't want to admit it in their history textbooks! That's why it's important to have memorials for the "historical events" like: 911, 6/4, civil rights movement, WW2, civil wars and many more...etc.

Is this author a Christian? The concept of "the city of mirrors (or mirages) would be wiped out by the wind and exiled from the memory of men..." reminds me of 傳道書 Ch 1 "...一代過去、一代又來．... 已有的事、後必再有．已行的事、後必再行．日光之下並無新事。 ...已過的世代、無人記念、將來的世代、後來的人也不記念。我見日光之下所作的一切事、都是虛空、都是捕風。"

BTW, I've been thinking of reading this book too, but it is just too ambitious for me to finish the whole book! Pls. share more, love to hear from a story teller.

Don't need to be ambitious to read the book. Though the story does not have any exciting events or dramatic moments, once you start reading, it will certainly attracts you to continue until you finish. So why don't you start reading without delay, I am sure you will come up with your unique reflections which you can share with me then :)

Yeah, I know...but I still haven't get the book yet. Also now-a-days, need to have certain "mood" in order to read a masterpiece like this. Maybe I should bring this with me on a trip or something!
